ACTION INCASE OF – GROUNDING

IMMEDIATE ACTION BY OOW

1.            Stop the Main Engines. (To avoid further damage)
2.            General Emergency Alarm to be sounded. (To inform crew)
3.            Call Master.
4.            Ascertain the position.
5.            Exhibit Vessel aground day/night signal. (To caution other vessels)
6.            Sound signal as per ROR.(To caution other vessels)
7.            Deck light to be switched on during dark hours. (To execute various action, to monitor ship stability, ISPA etc..)
8.            Caution nearest vessels by all available means. (VHF)
9.            Change status in AIS (Vessel Aground)
10.          Broadcast Urgency message.
11.          Check the time of High Water and Low Water. (to find the time to un-beach the vessel/ floating time)
12.          Observe the direction of Current.(To check the possibility of drifting to shallow water, drift after floatation)
13.          Compare the Charted depth with eco sounder.( to check weather grounding caused due to human error)
14.          Log entry of all events (detailed information are given in the below paragraphs)
15.          Ships contingency Plan and Emergency Check list be followed at all the time.

FOLLOWED ACTION BY BRIDGE TEAM:

01.          Inform the Coastal state/Company/Charter etc. (weather action, Support, Tug assistance, Salvage required)
02.          Inform respective team in charges to check for damages.(Deck/Engine Room)
03.          Check for any oil leakage, Activate SOPEP as required.
04.          Use of engine to be done considering the nature of bottom and time of high water.
05.          Anchoring to be done to avoid vessel dragging to more shallow water due to current/swell.
06.          Anchoring not to be done if the vessel grounded on a coral reef.
07.          Do not use astern engine if the vessel is aground on Coral reef. It will damage the propellers.

ACTION BY THE EMERGENCY TEAM

01.               Check for any Hull damage.
02.               Frequent monitoring of Draft forward and aft.
03.               Use hand lead line to monitor the nature of bottom.
04.               Use hand lead line to monitor the depth all around.
05.               Use hand lead line to monitor the height of tide.
06.               The same hand lead line can be used to monitor the vessel dragging.
07.               Calculate stability of the vessel. (be uptodate stability calculation, and carry them in handy)
08.               Take sounding of all tanks (To access the damage.) ( If so, Be aware that the safety is every bodies business onboard.  all sounding to be taken and to be recorded every day/ on completion of each operation legitimate).
09.               Carry out damage control measures.
10.               De-ballasting Sea water/Fresh Water/ Jettison of cargo/ Counter flooding etc to be calculated.
11.               The effect of above action and changes in list and trim to be calculated. (To un beach)

ACTION BY SUPPORT TEAM:

01           Close all watertight/weather tight doors/openings. (To prevent further flooding)
02.          Remove anchor lasing and report to bridge.
03.          Prepare life boat for launching as per the instruction of the bridge.

ACTION BY THE MEDICAL TEAM

01.          Carry stretcher and first aid.
02.          Assist support team to launch life boats as per the instruction of the bridge.

ENGINE ROOM TEAM

1.       Change over suction from  lower to high. (to avoid damage of machinery due to sediments).
2.       Check for oil leakage from tail shaft
3.       Check for the damages occurred in the machinery compartment.
4.       Check for any hull damage
5.       Observe the pipeline and valves for any damage.
6.       Check the electrical system for any damage.
7.       Check for the propeller/Rudder for any damage.
8.       Keep all pumps to stand by (for pumping out water).
9.       Turn the propeller with Turning gear and observe the performance.(To check whether the self propulsion will be available).

RECORD OF EVIDENCE:

(THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS TO BE MAINTAINED DURING THE ACTIONS)

01.          Make a log entry of all events with time and position of grounding.
02.          Carry out log entry in GMDSS/VHF Log book.
03.          Eco sounder log.
 04.         Mark in engine data log reader with time.
05.          Mark in Course recorder with time.
06.          Record of hand lead sounding taken.
07.          Record of frequent draft taken
